It’s been some time since our last one, but I’m pleased to announce another joint training session with the Iwanami Dojo, Yamakaze Dojo, Sojokan Dojo, and Kaigetsu Dojo on Saturday May 5th from 1:30 pm to 6:30 pm. As usual it will be held at CRCE in MP Room 1 and 2 (http://www.campusrec.illinois.edu/facilities/crce/location.html). You can park for free in the parking garage across from CRCE. Shortly after training we will be going out to dinner together. This time the admission cost of $10 admission will only apply to Iwanami Dojo students. Students traveling from out of town are free (due to their travel expenses). Again this cost of admission is to offset the cost of space. If you are not a campus rec member please check in at the entrance and tell them you are with the Shinkendo group. They should write your name down and let you in.

Although it would be recommended to attend the entire session, feel free to come to as much of this training session as you can (first 2-3 hours are highly recommended). This training session is open to all levels so don’t be intimidated by the amount of training we will be doing. This is a valuable opportunity to train with different instructors and students from other dojo so don’t miss out. Please respect instructors and students and follow the various visiting instructor’s instructions as you would be instructed at your own respective dojo. I hope to see everyone on the mat!

Mark your calendars there will be a Shinkendo Seminar with Obata Kaiso in Carbon Cliff Illinois the August 31st – Sept 2nd weekend (labor day weekend). Training will start that Friday at 4 pm, but of course you can come any time through out the seminar if you can’t make it Friday. A number of us from our dojo will be driving up so we can carpool and share hotel rooms. As we get more information from the organizers of this seminar we will of course pass that on to you guys. The seminar entrance fee will probably be somewhere between $175-$185, so start saving up . We all have five months to prepare ourselves financially and adjust our schedules. There is potential to apply for SORF funding to help out full time students that we will be looking into.

For those of you who don’t know, a Shinkendo seminar is where we invite Obata Kaiso to teach. Students of all levels are welcome to attend, so you shouldn’t be intimidated if you’re just starting out. We will be doing Shinkendo, Toyama Ryu, and Bojutsu at the seminar. This is a great opportunity to meet the founder of Shinkendo and learn from his example, it’s always a pleasure to see his technique let alone learn from him directly. So please think about it carefully and start planning, if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask. Also speak to some of the more junior students in class who have attended seminars in their earlier years of Shinkendo, they can attest to the benefit of attending. Above all it’s really fun, to travel with everyone and train with Kaiso. In the past we have actually had non-Shinkendo students request to attend the seminar just to see Obata Kaiso instruct and him perform technique.

One last note. This goes without saying, those of you who hold instructor rank ( or kirigami/goho student rank level and above) it is incumbent upon you to start attending seminars regularly (especially seminars held in Illinois). It’s important to be visible to Kaiso/Soke of Shinkendo, and more exposure to his instruction on technique. If you have questions about this please see one of the instructors in class to talk about it.
